In all seriousness though, for those who aren’t aware of its origins, Pride started as a riot. Led by Black trans women like Marsha P Johnson, a June evening in 1969 was the catalyst for an uprising of marginalized queer folks standing up to an oppressive police presence that was invading one of their only safe spaces, The Stonewall Inn. We have their action and courage to thank for how much the lives and liberties of the LGBTQIA+ community have improved. Progress is not certain though, something we can see in the wave of hateful and harmful anti-trans bills that are being passed around the county. Not to mention an impending threat to the protection of gay marriage itself. We’ve come too far to let our rights slip through our fingers though, which is why connection and community are key. If you or someone in your life could be impacted (or you just care) a great first step to get involved is to check out some of these organizations supporting LGBTQIA+ communities as well as groups working to combat this negative legislation.  Activists have, rightfully in my opinion, been critical of the corporatization of Pride month. What began as a defense of dignity for the most marginalized has morphed into an opportunity for giant companies to slap some rainbows on their basic merch in the name of a good PR opportunity. This tends to backfire when they turn around and donate to politicians and groups dedicated to stripping LGBTQIA+ people of their civil liberties.  So if you’re looking to spread the Pride cheer this year, do it by supporting queer-founded businesses. Whether you’re shopping for something for yourself or others, I’ve sourced 40 gift ideas that are either made by LGBTQIA+ artists and brands or directly supporting community-centered causes. None of that performative corporate nonsense here! If you’re feeling generous this June, number one, get involved, and number two, treat the queer people in your life to a little something special from brands actually working towards progress, representation and freedom.  Here at Parade.com, we’re all about sharing products we love with our audience. When you make a purchase on an item seen on this page, we may earn a commission, however, all picks are independently chosen unless otherwise mentioned.
