When is the Big Sky season 2 finale?

ABC just announced the finale date for Big Sky season 2. The season will wrap up on Thursday, May 19 in its usual 10 p.m. ET time slot.

Is Big Sky based on C.J. Box books?

Yes! David E. Kelley created the television series Big Sky after reading C.J. Box’s book The Highway. Kelley, a multi-Emmy and Golden Globe award winner, is known for his work on Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, Picket Fences, Boston Legal, Goliath, Mr. Mercedes among many other series.

What crimes and mysteries are being investigated in season 2 of Big Sky?

The story of Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty) is far from over! As far as we know he’s still on the lam and evading authorities at every turn. We’re also digging into some of the other Cassie Dewell novels from C.J. Box to see if we can find any upcoming plot points. Will Jenny and Lindor survive the shootout in the season finale? How will Cassie and Jenny’s relationship evolve? Who is the Syndicate and how will they play into season 2? Elwood Reid, who came on as an executive producer for the back half of season 1 and will serve as showrunner for season 2 told Entertainment Weekly, “One of the things that really makes the show work for me is these women processing this stuff emotionally.” Both Jenny and Cassie had their lives almost extinguished between Ronald and the Kleinsassers and Ronald has evaded capture once again so what does that mean for the two female detectives? Reid said, “As the show moves forward in the second season, I promise you we will take a breath and process what that means, and they’ll process what that means for their relationship together going forward. That’s the heart of the show.”

Who’s in the cast of season 2 of Big Sky?

Although a couple storylines wrapped up in the first season of Big Sky (the missing sisters and The Kleinsasser clan) as well as some season 1 regulars being killed off, fans can rest assured that the core cast will be returning.

Kylie Bunbury (Cassie Dewell)

Cassie is a private investigator in the small town of Big Sky and is one of the central characters in C.J. Box’s books. She originally works with Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillipe) but after he goes missing and later turns up dead, Cassie and Jenny form a partnership of sorts. Bunbury was previously the lead in Fox TV series, Pitch, about the first female pitcher in Major League baseball.

Kathryn Winnick (Jenny Hoyt)

Jenny is a former police detective who is estranged from her husband, Cody Hoyt, at the beginning of the series. When her son’s girlfriend and sister go missing, as well as Cody, she and Cassie join forces to investigate. In the back half of the first season, she gets involved in a case when her ex, Blake Kleinsasser calls her for help. Winnick is a Canadian actress who has had main cast roles on Vikings and Wu Assassins before joining the cast of Big Sky.

John Carroll Lynch

John Carroll Lynch is returning to Big Sky! In a surprise twist (as is par for the show), ABC announced during their Big Sky presentation at TCA (Television Critics Association) that John Carroll Lynch would be returning for season 2. Lynch made a surprise appearance during the virtual panel when Parade.com asked if any other actors or characters from the first season would be returning for season two. As you remember, Lynch’s character, Rick Legarski, died last season at the hands of his wife, Merrillee (Brooke Smith). It’s unclear if the actor will return to the show as another character or as Legarski in flashback scenes. Last season, it was mentioned that Legarski had a twin. Perhaps Lynch will be playing Rick’s brother!

Dedee Pfeiffer (Denise Brisbane)

Denise is the detective agency’s receptionist extraordinaire. In real life, Pfeiffer is the sister-in-law of Big Sky creator and producer, David. E. Kelley.

Brian Geraghty (Ronald Pergman)

Ronald is a long-haul truck driver who helps state trooper Rick Legarski kidnap and traffic young women for the Syndicate. At the end of the first season, he has escaped capture and is on the run with Scarlet (Anja Savcic). Geraghty was previously on ChicagoPD as Officer Sean Roman.

Jesse James Keitel (Jerrie Kennedy)

Jerrie is a struggling musician who finds herself turning tricks at a local truck stop and unfortunately enters the cab of Ronald Pergman. Ronald kidnaps her and keeps her in captivity but after she and the sisters are located and freed, Jerrie helps Cassie and Jenny (and later Lindor) with their investigations and eventually locates Ronald again. Keitel is moving from series regular in season 1 to recurring character in season 2. Keitel was the first nonbinary actor to play a series regular on a primetime television show. Keitler uses she/her and they/them pronouns.

Omar Metwally (Mark Lindor)

Lindor is a U.S. Marshal who arrives in Big Sky to aid in the capture of Ronald Pergman. Though the fate of the U.S. Marshal is unclear at the end of season 1, Metwally has been upped to a series regular for season 2 so we suspect Lindor will survive any life-threatening injuries he sustained in the finale’s shootout. Metwally was previously on The Affair and Treadstone.

Anja Savcic

Anja Savcic, who plays Scarlet Leyendecker, has been promoted from recurring to a regular cast member for season 2. We can’t wait to see more of her role as the doting mother to 10-year-old Phoebe.

Janina Gavankar

Janina Gavankar is joining the cast for season 2. She will play Ren, a newcomer to Helena to is looking for answers to who betrayed her.

Logan Marshall-Green

Logan Marshall-Green (The O.C., 24, Prometheus) is joining the cast of Big Sky as a series regular. He’ll play Travis, the “flirtatious face from Jenny’s past”. Marshall-Green’s character has been working undercover in a local drug ring but he’s been entrenched as his alter ego for so long that the line between the real Travis and his undercover persona begins to blur. He and Jenny will cross paths in the new season as her investigation intersects with his covert operations. While the two try to keep their relationship professional, unresolved feelings from the past begin to surface putting both their investigations and their lives in jeopardy.

Will Cheyenne and Margaret Kleinsasser return for Big Sky season 2?

As the only surviving Kleinsassers from season 1, the two female Kleinsassers could still wreak havoc on Jenny’s life. Cheyenne even went so far as to bring Jenny some cupcakes with a fierce lioness motif on them. Whether this was a gesture of goodwill or some sort of veiled threat is anyone’s guess. There were plenty of avenues for the storyline to continue with the sole Kleinsasser survivors, but for right now it looks like that story will be put on the back burner. Neither Britt Robertson or Michelle Forbes will be returning for the season 2. Forbes is joining the cast of New Amsterdam while Robertson is playing the titular character in the indie feature, The Re-Education of Molly Singer, which is currently filming.

What happened in Big Sky season 1?

At the beginning of the premiere season, two sisters—Danielle and Grace Sullivan (Natalie Alyn Lind and Jade Pettyjohn, respectively)—are headed up to Big Sky to meet up with Danielle’s boyfriend, Justin Hoyt (Gage Marsh). On their way there, their car breaks down and they are kidnapped by Ron Pergman, who pretends to stop to help them. Justin’s father, Cody, goes to search for them and he goes missing too. With three people now missing, Justin’s mother, Jenny, teams up with Cassie and begins to look into the disappearances. Locked in a storage container with Jerrie, another captive, the sisters plot an escape plan. Ultimately, the three women are rescued but Ronald still on the run and his cohort, Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch) is hospitalized after having been shot in the head by Cassie. Whew! All of that was just in the first half of Big Sky’s premiere season. In the back half, Jenny gets involved in another case after an old flame calls her for help. Blake Kleinsasser (Michael Raymond-James) finds himself mixed up in a crime that pulls him back into his family’s dysfunctional ways. John, his younger brother (Kyle Schmid) wants to take control of the family ranch from their domineering and manipulative father, Horst (Ted Levine). With an equally manipulative sister, Cheyenne (Britt Robertson) and a seemingly meek mother (Michelle Forbes), it’s no wonder Blake has been trying to leave his family behind. Ultimately, only the Kleinsasser women survive the goings-on at the ranch. Meanwhile, Ronald is captured but only for a short while. After he reveals the location of one of his victims, Mark and Jenny are taking him back to jail when a car crashes into and wrecks their vehicle. Two men from the Syndicate exit the car and begin firing on them. Both Mark and Jenny are injured in the crash and shootout. Ronald escapes with the Syndicate and is reunited with Scarlet, but when the two realize there are no plans to return for Scarlet’s daughter, the two overpower and kill their rescuers.
