The MCU spinoff series about Marvel’s Asgardian antihero gives an in-depth look at Tom Hiddleston’s beloved trickster as he navigates different timelines alongside Time Variance Authority agent Owen Wilson and meets alternate versions of himself. Loki and his partners in timeline crime visit various apocalypses, creating “Nexus Events” that the TVA has to correct in order to prevent massive multiverse wars… but the TVA isn’t what it seems. Of course, anyone who’s seen Avengers: Infinity Warand Avengers: Endgamemay have some questions about exactly how Loki is still around, while casual Marvel fans may not realize how much Hiddleston’s beloved chaotic prince is capable of (including, apparently, changing genders—more on that later). In later episodes of Season 1, Loki hints that even though Lokis can be defeated, they always survive. But how? Here’s everything you need to know about Loki the character and Loki the series, but beware: If you aren’t up to date on the MCU, there are major spoilers ahead for some of the MCU films, as well as Loki Season 1!
Is Loki genderfluid in the Loki series?
Yes! In Loki on Disney+, we get our first look at Loki as the genderfluid trickster that fans of the comics (as well as of Norse mythology) know him to be. As Hiddleston recently told Inverse, “It’s always been there in the comics for some time and in the history of the character for hundreds, if not thousands of years.” A teaser posted to Twitter before the show’s premiere offered a glimpse of Loki’s file from the TVA, which listed his gender as “fluid.” “I know how many people identify with Loki in particular and are eager for that representation, especially with this character,” Loki head writer Michael Waldron likewise told Inverse. “We worked really hard.” Indeed they did, as Lady Loki was introduced in Loki Episode 2!
Who plays Lady Loki?
Sophia Di Martino plays Lady Loki in Loki. Di Martino is a British actress with credits including Into the Badlands, Flowers, Casualty, Mount Pleasant and Yesterday. Hiddleston previously gushed about Di Martino, “I cannot wait for audiences to see Sophia in this! She has taken certain characteristics, which are very familiar to me: mischief, playfulness, maybe a little bit of interior fragmentation and some broken emotions in there. But [she is] so committed and she made it completely her own. And she did all her own preparation and research and it was such a fun dynamic.”
Who is female Loki?
The female Loki in Loki is Lady Loki, who goes by Sylvie. According to Mobius, she is the “superior version” of the Loki we know and love. (But of course!)
Why did Loki turn into a woman?
In the comics, Loki is reborn as a woman, known simply as Lady Loki, after the events of Ragnarok in Asgard, but even that wasn’t too innocent: When Thor and his fellow Asgardians are to be reborn in new bodies on Earth, Loki actually stole the body intended to be for Sif. In the comics, Lady Loki has all of the same powers and history as the original Loki. Loki will clearly not follow that storyline (at least not yet); otherwise, Lady Loki would look a lot more like Jaimie Alexander. But only time (and its variants!) will tell if that happens down the line. Alexander did make an uncredited appearance as Sif in a time-loop used to punish Hiddleston’s Loki for crossing Mobius and the TVA, but it’s unclear if she’ll be back in any other contexts.
Is Lady Loki just Loki?
An alternate timeline version (or “Variant”) version of Loki in the series is Lady Loki, also known as Sylvie (she hates being called a Loki). Loki is on the hunt for Lady Loki in his service to the TVA; when he encounters her true form, she tells him, “This isn’t about you.” There are a lot of layers to that statement! In the Loki Season 1 finale, “For All Time. Always,” Sylvie reveals she was actually around longer than Loki, telling him that she was “pruned” from the sacred timeline before he even ever existed. We got a huge, indeliberate hint about Lady Loki’s presence back in March 2020, when leaked images from the set of the series showed Di Martino wearing an outfit that’s nearly identical to Loki’s classic green and gold number. It remains unclear so far under what circumstances Lady Loki was created in Loki, but check this space in coming weeks as more details are revealed!
Is Enchantress Lady Loki?
Fans have theorized that Lady Loki may not be Loki after all, but Thor comics villain Enchantress. There are a few reasons for that: In the English credits, Di Martino is credited for the role of “Variant,” but in the Spanish credits, her character’s name is listed as “Sylvie.” Additionally, IMDbPro revealed that an actress named Cailey Fleming was cast as “Young Sylvie” in Loki Episode 4, even if it isn’t Di Martino playing her. You may recognize Fleming from her role of Judith Grimes from The Walking Dead, as well as from playing young Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Enchantress’ name in the comics is Sylvie Lushton, and she’s actually the not the first incarnation of Enchantress. The first Enchantress’ name is Amora, and those who watched Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.may remember Enchantress appearing and wreaking havoc on Earth that Sif had to come and fix. That Enchantress’ name was Lorelei, and she was Amora’s sister. Now here’s where it gets really interesting: In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Sif said that Odin tasked her with returning Lorelei to Asgard from Earth. Because Lorelei’s Enchantress’ appearance on Earth came after the events of Thor: The Dark World, the Odin giving Sif those orders was likely actually Loki in disguise. In the comics, Sylvie Lushton gets her magical powers from Loki when she’s a teen in one of his efforts to create (what else?) chaos. She models herself after the Asgardian villain Enchantress Amora and eventually takes up her moniker. This means that an alternate timeline Loki (or the actual one!) may have created his own variant…and his own future headache. However, in the series, none of that has been revealed yet, and Sylvie revealed her backstory involved her being chased by the TVA since her childhood in Asgard. In an interview, Di Martino told Collider, “I knew that one of the Enchantresses in the MCU also went by the name of Sylvie. And I know that writers and producers have been inspired by the comics for this story and this character. But it’s a new story and it’s a new backstory for Sylvie.” In Season 1, there is no other indicator that Sylvie is the Enchantress, despite enchanting her adversaries: It’s a power she has as a Loki. Time will tell if that changes in Season 2.
Why is Loki a girl?
Loki isn’t a girl, as he is genderfluid. Lady Loki (Sylvie) is an alternate timeline version of Loki.

Yep, Loki confirmed that he’s dated both men and women, but that none of his relationships ever got serious.
Who are the new variants in Loki in Episode 4?
Loki Episode 4 revealed even more new variants of the Asgardian demi-god of mischief. After Hiddleston’s Loki was pruned and woke up in what appears to be a different dimension, we were given a glimpse of Boastful Loki (an apparently Mjolnir-wielding DeObia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), Old/Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant) and even a tiny alligator rocking a Loki helmet.
Who are the Time-Keepers?
They’re actually just androids. They aren’t real, as revealed in Episode 4; Episode 6 revealed that the Time-Keepers were manufactured by Kang the Conqueror to trick everyone into thinking the TVA was legitimate.
How are nexus beings and nexus events connected?
In Loki, whenever something deviates from the timelines in place by the TVA, it is dubbed a “nexus event.” Scarlet Witch is a nexus being in the comics, meaning she has the ability to alter timelines through her manipulation of probabilities. It’s likely that WandaVision, as a result, ties directly into the events of Loki and Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, both of which examine the multiverse and its impacts on the characters within them.
Will Loki have a love interest?
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Waldron revealed that Loki will, indeed, have a love interest in the series, and it turned out to be Sylvie! The pair had a major connection on Lamentis that triggered a nexus event, and they finally kissed in the Season 1 finale, though Sylvie then reluctantly betrayed Loki to avenge herself against He Who Remains.

Is Loki good or bad?
Whether Loki is good or bad really depends on who’s asking, what they want from him and what Loki can get from any given situation. Essentially, Loki thrives on chaos, which can present itself in any number of ways. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki was, at least for a time, unknowingly being mind-controlled by Thanos in the Big Bad’s quest to obtain all of the Infinity Stones, so it’s hard to hold that against him.
Why did Loki become evil?
Loki was always resentful of Thor (played in the Marvel movies by ChrisHemsworth) being named king of Asgard instead of him, but that made Loki act more entitled and bratty than truly wicked…for a time. Loki’s desire to kill Asgard’s longtime foes, the Frost Giants (including his own birth father), was his way of trying to prove to Odin that he was worthy of the throne that his golden-haired brother still went on to inherit. Misguided? Yes. Murderous and genocidal? Certainly. Evil? Yes, but his redemption arc may indicate he wasn’t always so inherently and deliberately wicked. “Loki is arrogant, proud, vain, pompous and smug but underneath all of that are reservoirs of pain, lack of self-esteem, and emotional sadness," Hiddleston previously told Parade. “When people don’t like themselves very much, they have to make up for it. The classic bully was actually a victim first. I never thought about Loki’s swagger so it evolved from his vanity.” Additionally, Marvel confirmed that, for quite a bit of time in the MCU, Loki was brainwashed by the Mind Stone, which made him more deceitful and cruel than his actual nature may have led him to be. Loki himself says in Episode 2 of Loki that the truth is likely not quite so black and white, quipping, “No one bad is ever truly bad, and no one good is ever truly good.”
What is Loki’s real name?
Loki’s real name is Loki Laufeyson. After being adopted by the king of Asgard, his name became Loki Odinson.
Is Loki dead?
Loki is alive…in one timeline. He faked his own death numerous times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first in 2011’s Thor, then 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, with the latter’s trickery lasting until Thor grew wise to the con in Thor: Ragnarok. When Thanos killed Loki in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki’s parting words to his adopted brother were, “I assure you brother, the sun will shine on us again.” Due to the Avengers’ manipulation of timelines in Infinity War, there is at least one timeline in which Loki is still alive and wreaking havoc. Additionally, when the TVA “pruned” Loki, the post-credits scene in Episode 4 revealed that he was, indeed, alive…and that there were several more versions of him, including a gator (seriously!) and one of whom was worthy of wielding Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer. Loki said himself that while Lokis may not always win, they always survive.
Why did Loki sacrifice himself?
Theories vary as to whether Loki deliberately sacrificed himself in Avengers: Infinity War or if he truly thought he could kill Thanos with his signature dagger. However, one theory that has recently gained traction on Reddit is that Loki sacrificed himself to protect Thor and increase the Avengers’ chances of victory, as well as to get himself into Valhalla (essentially, “The Good Place” for Norse demigods). According to the theory, Loki appealed to Thanos’ desire for balance by specifying that he was Loki Odinson, knowing Thanos would either kill him or Thor as each were sons of Odin, and in doing so, knew he could keep Thor alive if he himself perished. “Loki suspected Thanos would have chosen to kill Thor, being the bigger threat and Loki having worked for Thanos in the past,” the theory states. “Also, Loki being half-sibling and adopted would have won over Thanos’ favor in the end as he has a soft spot for things that are half and for adoption. If you think about it, there was no reason to leave Thor alive. He is very powerful, has been alive for 1,500 years [and] Thanos surely is aware of the threat he possesses. Yet he just leaves [Thor] there after killing Loki.”
Is the TVA evil?
The TVA is a form of control from Kang the Conqueror. It is a tool he uses to control the sacred timeline: He essentially eliminates free will to control the flow of time. “Variants” like Loki are “pruned” from the timeline and/or brainwashed to work for him as TVA agents, erasing their memories and lives to drone away for him indefinitely.
Is Ravonna Renslayer a villain?
TVA judge Ravonna Renslayer, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is one of Kang the Conqueror’s closest allies. She was originally portrayed as one of the only people in the universe who’s met the Time-Keepers, but, of course, the Time-Keepers were a sham. She knew all along and went along with the plan to brainwash and control variants to work towards a villainous goal: To control the sacred timeline and eliminate free will from those living in it. In the comics, Ravonna Renslayer is in a relationship with Kang the Conqueror, played by Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors, who made his MCU debut in Loki Season 1, Episode 6 as “He Who Remains.” The series appears to confirm that this relationship is canon in the MCU as well. It’s unclear, however, if she is even in full control of herself in terms of her aiding the villain in his ruling over the sacred timeline: In the Season 1 finale, Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) revealed that Ravonna used to be a school principal in another timeline and had no idea what was going on around her.
Will Kang the Conqueror be in Loki?
Kang the Conqueror made his debut in Loki in the Season 1 finale as a variant of himself known as “He Who Remains.”
Is Kang the Conqueror good or bad?
Kang the Conqueror is essentially a time-traveling dictator. In the Loki Season 1 finale, he is revealed to have channeled the power of Alioth to create the TVA and control the sacred timeline. He Who Remains claims he did so to prevent a multiversal war that destroyed everything as the world knew it, claiming that alternate variants of himself were evil. “Without me, without the TVA, everything burns,” he said. Ultimately, despite his protests, Kang the Conqueror is pretty bad in theory: In Loki Season 1, Episode 6, Sylvie points out that Kang eliminates free will to serve his own purposes. Kang himself explains that his variants are at fault for the multiversal war because they fought one another: When he discovered the multiverse in the 31st century, he realized, “Not every version of me was so…so pure of heart. To some of us, new worlds meant only one thing: new lands to be conquered. The peace between realities erupted into all-out war.” He also warned, “If you think I’m evil, well, just wait till you meet my variants.”

Is Mephisto in Loki?
Mephisto is essentially Marvel’s near-equivalent to the Devil (he’s based on and gets his name from the demon Mephistopheles from Doctor Faustus). He was widely speculated by many Marvel fans to be appearing in WandaVision due to his complicated ties with Scarlet Witch and her twins in the comics…and that didn’t happen. WandaVision creator Jac Schaefferexplained, “We didn’t think this series needed a big bad. I mean, the big bad is grief, you know, and that’s the story that we were telling, and then we got a bonus baddie in the form of Agatha Harkness who ended up facilitating Wanda’s therapy, so yeah, I think we feel pretty good about that.” She also admitted to deliberately sprinkling red herrings throughout the series to lead fans to theorize about Mephisto’s potential presence that ultimately never panned out. That said, could Mephisto appear in Loki? Many believed that the scene in the French church, where a child points to a stained glass window featuring what appears to be the devil, was a reference to Mephisto. However, Loki director Kate Herron flat-out debunked that theory, telling Entertainment Tonight, “It’s honestly just a super weird coincidence. Like, it’s genuinely a reference to Loki—the horns, he was cast out of heaven, that’s what it’s a reference to. Because we filmed that a long time before—I think WandaVision must have been in post when we filmed that. I did see all the stuff about that online and I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be interesting.’ But no, it’s more relevant to the themes of our show and it’s not a nod to that character.” Mephisto never appeared in Season 1 of Loki, but now that Season 2 has been confirmed, only time will tell if he’ll appear later: The multi-verse leaves a lot of opportunities for deals with the devil, and He Who Remains may have referenced the character in the Season 1 finale. “You came to kill the devil, right?” he told Sylvie and Loki. “Well, guess what? I keep you safe.”
Did Loki steal the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame?
In Avengers: Endgame, the superhero team time-travels back to New York City in 2012, when the original Avengers took place and where Loki led his Chitauri attack on the Big Apple. During the melee, 2012 Loki was left unsupervised for a split second, in which he nabbed the Tesseract and teleported away, but until now, it was unclear where he ended up.
Is Loki a Frost Giant? Why is Loki not blue?
Loki is the biological son of Laufey, king of Jotunheim, land of the Frost Giants. Loki is small and weak when he’s born, and Laufey essentially denies his paternity and hides Loki from the world in shame. Odin finds Loki and takes pity on him, adopting him as his own and using magic to make Loki appear Asgardian (and quite similar to Odin’s biological daughter, Hela, played by Cate Blanchett).
Does Loki love Thor?
Loki and Thor’s brotherly love could be best described as “it’s complicated.” After centuries of power struggles and bickering over their parents’ love, Loki sacrificed himself in Avengers: Infinity Warto save Thor and the rest of the universe. Hiddleston previously explained of Loki ahead of Thor: The Dark World, “He was a prince who loved his brother and I hope we get back to that since he started that way. I think that’s the most fascinating aspect of him. He’s constantly treading on this tightrope of redemption. In Avengers, he has really yielded to the dark side but hopefully down the line there is a possibility of redemption. The question is can he be forgiven by Thor? Can he accept that forgiveness? Can he forgive himself and does he want to? And even in the event of that reconciliation, is that the last of the god of mischief? The mythology of the character is that you can never quite trust him.”
Why did Loki hate Thor? Why does Loki hate Odin?
Loki didn’t believe Thor was worthy of the Asgardian throne and was incredibly resentful and jealous of the god of thunder. He also resented his father, Odin, for feeling like Odin constantly overlooked him in favor of Thor. Loki spent centuries desperate to eclipse Thor in Odin’s eyes, but his schemes never quite worked out the way he planned. However, at the end of Odin’s life, as well as Loki’s, he came around and did the most loving things he could (sacrificing himself and trying to save his father) in the best ways he knew how, especially considering for much of those incidents, he was being mind-controlled by Thanos.
