Barrymore spoke with Adam Sandler when he appeared on her The Drew Barrymore Show, revealing that she’s chatted with her former Charlie’s Angels co-star about rebooting the 1987 classic comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The topic came up as Barrymore noted that she and Sandler have also discussed the idea before. “Her and I did discuss remaking Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and I was like, ‘well, you know, Adam and I talk about that,’” she told the comedian. “Yeah, I’d let you do that,” Sandler told Barrymore. Barrymore has seemingly thought this through as she already knew who she would want to play, noting, “I want to play John Candy," referring to Candy’s character, Del Griffith. “Well… you could do a good Candy,” Sandler said, assuring her of her choice. The comedy film also starred Steve Martin as Neal Page, a man whose flight is rerouted due to a snowstorm and thwarts his plans of getting back home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family. He crosses paths with Griffith, and together, they seek out a way to get to their destination by any means necessary. There is already a remake of the film in the works with Kevin Hart and Will Smith for Paramount Pictures, according to Deadline, however, there’s nothing stopping Barrymore and Diaz from delivering a female-focused reprise. In fact, Diaz, who confirmed that she retired from acting in 2018, is back in the game as she returned from hiatus earlier this year after signing on for a Netflix film with Jamie Foxx. Diaz has also proven herself in the holiday romance genre starring as Amanda Woods in The Holiday, and while fans would do anything for that sequel, filmmaker Nancy Meyers and actress Kate Winslet have already shut down the possibility.
