The sale of the iconic outfit broke a world record, according to Kruse GWS Auctions, which sold the jumpsuit and cape at its Artifacts of Hollywood & Music auction on Sept. 4. The auction included several pieces of Elvis memorabilia, including the jumpsuit he wore in the 1968 musical action movie, Speedway.  Elvis’ Schick electric razor also sold for $3,000. The racing helmet from his 1964 movie Viva Las Vegas also sold for $23,750. The auction also included a jar of Elvis’ hair, collected over time by his barber, Homer Gilleland. Elvis, known for his pompadour hairstyle, often paid for Gilleland to fly out and cut his hair while he was traveling, according to the GWS Auctions website. The jar of hair sold for $72,500. “We are thrilled to have hosted such an exciting auction this weekend where fans and collectors from around the globe bid on extraordinary memorabilia from the life and career of Elvis Presley,” Brigitte Kruse, founder of Kruse GWS Auctions, said in a release. “The outstanding sale of his iconic 1972 Madison Square Garden eyelet jumpsuit and cape represents not only a world record price but is a true testament to the legendary reverence and love people still feel for him.” Next up, check out the John Lennon suit that went to the auction block for $50,000!
