Well, from one of their wedding cakes, that is—the couple served no fewer than 27 cakes at their reception. The preserved slice of frosting on a marzipan base is elaborately decorated with a “sugared inlay” depicting the royal coat of arms in “gold, red, blue and silver.” It was collected from Charles and Diana’s wedding reception by a member of the Queen Mother’s household staff, who preserved it in saran wrap and kept it in an old cake tin. According to the BBC, the label she affixed to the tin read, “Handle with Care—Prince Charles & Princess Diane’s [sic] Wedding Cake,” which she then signed and wrote the date “27 July 1981.” After being sold to a collector in 20o8, the cake went up for auction where it was expected to fetch no more than $500 ($691). Online bidder Gerry Layton emerged victorious from the bidding war. “I thought I would like to add it to my estate, which will be going to charity after my death,” he said. “I also thought that I could put it up as a raffle prize with some of the money going to Centrepoint, which Princess Di was patron of.” Next up, Meghan Markle Wore Two New Diamond Necklaces That Represent Archie and Lili’s Star Signs!
