Prince Harry and Meghan Markle posed for photos at their Montecito home in California after making the #TIME100 list for 2021. Editor-in-chief and CEO of Time Edward Felsenthal writes, “Our cover portrait, taken by Pari Dukovic, marks the first time the world-famous couple has formally posed together for a magazine cover shoot.” According to photo-editor Dilys Ng, who has handled the TIME100 covers for the past few years, the cover portrait captures the Sussexes’ “powerful dynamic as equal partners.” Meghan, dressed in a pure white jumpsuit, gazes unflinchingly into the camera while her husband (in black) stands just behind her with his hand resting on her shoulder. A second photograph depicts the couple standing in front of a window inside their home. Harry wears a suit with the collar of his shirt undone, while Meghan’s eyes are dramatically lined in black and her hair is swept back into a messy updo. She wears an olive-green turtleneck and wide, high-waisted black pants. The announcement that the Sussexes’ have made the list comes on Harry’s 37th birthday today! Their brief profile in the issue is written by José Andrés, the chef who founded World Central Kitchen (an organization that has been supported by the Sussexes’ charitable foundation, Archewell.) He writes, “In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the duke and duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know. “They don’t just opine. They run toward the struggle.” He pays tribute to Meghan’s past humanitarian work and the couple’s work with the Archewell Foundation, saying, “They turn compassion into boots on the ground. He goes on, “They give voice to the voiceless with through media production. Hand in hand with nonprofit partners, they take risks to help communities in need—offering mental health support to Black women and girls in the U.S., and feeding those affected by natural disasters in India and the Caribbean.” José also notes that in many ways it would have been easier for Harry and Meghan to say and do nothing at all. “Springing into action is not the easy choice for a young duke and duchess who have been blessed through birth and talent, and burned by fame. “It would have been much safer to enjoy their good fortune and stay silent.” Next up, Prince Harry and Prince William Come Together to Pay Tribute to Prince Philip in New BBC Documentary
