On April 5, Heughan Instagrammed a photo of him and Men in Kilts co-host Graham McTavish in a pair of traditional Scottish kilts while sharing, “So proud of our wee show Men in Kilts! Before that, Heughan and McTavish had shared news of their travel series’ Season 2 renewal in a November 2021 video full of their trademark banter and lighthearted mockery. “We had such a fantastic time on Men in Kilts Season 1,” Heughan said in the clip. “We’re going to do it again!" Season 1 of Men in Kilts explored the actors’ shared homeland of Scotland, but the six-episode Season 2 will take Heughan and McTavish all the way to the other side of the globe when they head to New Zealand. “There will be driving, joy, shock, surprises, landscapes, history, and a celebration of all things Kiwi,” McTavish wrote on Twitter. When will Men in Kilts Season 2 air?
No release date has been announced, but we know as of Feb. 16, 2022, that the season has finished filming. Heughan shared that news on social media alongside a darling photo of him and McTavish (both clad in kilts, of course) flashing peace signs in front of a lovely, verdant view. “That’s a wrap!” Heughan captioned the post. “Incredible road trip around NZ, huge thank you to everyone that helped us navigate every bump in the road and really helped us go the extra mile!” He added, “You’re going to LOVE Season 2… I promise @grahammctavish is still alive.” Not long before that, in early February 2022, Heughan and McTavish were spotted filming in the New Zealand city of Invercargill (population: about 57,000), where sources told New Zealand Herald they were staying at the local Kelvin Hotel. It was also reported that their next stop was expected to be the country’s Otago region, also located on New Zealand’s South Island. After that news broke, Heughan confirmed in a Feb. 11 tweet that Season 2 had officially begun production in New Zealand and that fans can look forward to an “epic journey.”
How many episodes are in Men in Kilts?
While Men in Kilts Season 1 consisted of eight episodes, Men in Kilts Season 2 will reportedly contain six episodes.
Where will Men in Kilts Season 2 take place?
The biggest change fans can expect for Season 2 is that, like Outlander, we’re not in Scotland anymore! While Outlander now takes place in America, Men in Kilts will head to another region of the world where Scottish immigrants settled: New Zealand. Beyond that connection to their homeland, though, why go there? It’s likely because McTavish, who’s originally from Scotland, has lived in New Zealand since 2011. The actor, who also played Dwalin in The Hobbit trilogy (which was filmed in New Zealand) has also previously explored the country on foot in iFit’s New Zealand Trekking Series. In the Men in Kilts Season 2 announcement, McTavish called the country “a place that I love dearly.”

Who will be in the cast of Men in Kilts Season 2?
As with Season 1, Men in Kilts Season 2 will feature Heughan and McTavish, who conceived and developed the show together, as the star road-trippers. We don’t know yet what local experts, makers, musicians and historians we’ll meet along the way, though.
What is Men in Kilts Season 2 about?
According to McTavish, New Zealand is “the Scotland of the Southern hemisphere,” due to all the Scottish immigrants who settled there. “We are going to be enjoying ourselves in the footsteps of the Scottish immigrants that went there in the early 19th century,” McTavish says, while Heughan added, “Not only that but we are going to be looking at the culture of New Zealand: the food, the drink, the [indigenous] Maori culture." In addition, Heughan says viewers can expect more “high octane activities, the death-defying adrenaline junkie adventures” that McTavish was hesitant to partake in during the first season—which was a source of much of the show’s humor. “That last bit, what was that referring to exactly?” Graham asked with trepidation during the announcement. “Oh, it’s nothing, I wouldn’t worry about it,” Heughan deadpanned. Later on, in a March 2022 sitdown with Forbes, Heughan elaborated more on what Men in Kilts Season 2 will show the fans. “We were exploring the culture of New Zealand, the Scottish heritage… the connection there with the immigrants,” he explained. “And then, we were looking at the food and drink, we’re looking at the activities you can do. It’s very much an outdoors country, the wildlife. And of course, lots of torturing Graham.”
What happened in Men in Kilts Season 1?
In the first season of the show, which premiered in February 2021, Heughan and McTavish drove a van around Scotland exploring different aspects of Scottish culture and history. Outlander (the earlier seasons of which took place in Scotland) was the inspiration for the travel show, but the two lads’ buddy humor and bromance soon became its major appeal. Viewers became armchair travelers as Heughan and McTavish tasted Scottish cuisine and whisky, participated in Highland sports such as hammer throwing and stone lifting, learned Scottish dancing, discovered Scottish superstitions, explored the clans and their famous tartans and delved into the historic Battle of Culloden. Oh, and Heughan ran naked into the ocean. Let’s hope there’s a repeat of that antic for Season 2!
