The Swedish model and actress posted a nude photo on Instagram on Friday, August 26, questioning which description best fit at the start of a hefty caption as “a little weekend food for thought.” In a society run by men, Porizkova pointed out that women are typically seen as objects of either desire or nurture, based on their needs, rather than the women’s. “This is why youth and beauty are such a strong currency,” she wrote alongside the photo, which features the woman sitting on the edge of a bed, holding a sheet to her torso. But what happens if a woman takes it into her own hands and “decides to objectify herself” by taking—and sharing—a more risque shot? “She is taking the powers she has been given and using them in her own interest,” Porizkova said, “but is simultaneously helping to perpetuate a system which has always existed. For this she will be shamed and celebrated by both the perpetrators and the victims.” The hypocrisy of the pressures that many young women, especially, feel to show off their bodies for the benefit of others—not to mention the vitriol that they are often subjected to for doing so—needs to end. As the former supermodel pointed out, if a man were to do the same, he would likely be lauded for “seizing his power” and shamed only if he refused the opportunity to do so. “Given these social guidelines- I’ve come to wonder if objectification falls mainly into the realm of youth. When I was a young model exposing my body, it was because someone else approved of it. Someone else decided it was to be celebrated,” Porizkova wrote, adding that she didn’t know enough to realize or understand the potential consequences. “Hence, objectification.” So now, when she chooses to expose her body, it’s with her “full knowledge and consent” and only as a celebration. Her followers were quick to join her. “Thank you Paulina. I celebrate with you! I want my power,” one commented, and many shared similar sentiments. Porizkova has championed body positivity in the past, too; she recently clapped back at a plastic surgeon that had reportedly pointed out all that she needed to fix about her face.
