In many ways, this news is a long time coming: After dozens of incidents of injuries (including the death of a six-year-old child) related to using Peloton’s treadmills, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned users in April to stop using the Peloton Tread+. While Peloton initially resisted this warning, saying there was no reason to stop using it, the company—which is best known for its ultra-popular stationary bike—admitted that it had made a mistake. “The decision to recall both products was the right thing to do for Peloton’s Members and their families,” John Foley, the chief executive of Peloton, said in a statement released by the CPSC. “I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+.  We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize.” Peloton’s treadmills were sold in the U.S. from November 2020 to March 2021, so if you bought one in an effort to do more at-home workouts, chances are you’re none too pleased—especially because Peloton’s Tread+ treadmills cost $4,295, and the Tread is $2,495. While the most important thing is your safety and the safety of the people you love—and you should stop using the treadmill immediately—rest assured that Peloton is taking some action to right their wrong.
