Prince William made the bold decision to pair a black turtleneck with a green velvet suit (leading some commentators, perhaps fairly, to compare him to a Bond villain) while Duchess Kate looked dazzling in pale lilac. The pastel gown is by Alexander McQueen, and was previously worn by Kate during the Cambridges’ tour of L.A. back in 2011. Guests attending the Earthshot Prize had been asked not to purchase any new clothing for the event, but to wear items they already owned. However Kate did update the dress by switching out its original diamanté belt with a subtler bead-studded belt from Jenny Packham’s 2018 bridal collection. It also seems the duchess has finally ditched the bouncy blow-out hairstyle for the gentler wavy locks that Meghan Markle favors. Kate finished the look with morganite earrings from one of her favorite jewelry designers, Kiki McDonough (Hello reports that the duchess may own up to 17 pairs of earrings from the designer, which tend to have a retail price between $2000 and $4500.) It was a star-studded night, with Dame Emma Thompson turning up in the blue suit she wore when the Duke of Cambridge presented her with her damehood in 2018. Meanwhile Emma Watson wore a white tulle dress that was actually made of ten dresses from Oxfam, which she paired with black flared pants and big black boots. There’s a lot going on there, Emma! Winners in each of the five categories—Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate—each received a prize fund of £1m ($1.4m) to help realize their innovative solutions to help tackle climate change. The winner in the Protect and Restore Nature category was the Republic of Costa Rica, which pays its citizens to protect rainforests and local ecosystems.
