For the person desperate for the end of Droughtlander, you’ll find relief in the form of clips and montages from Outlander within the new Starz travel docuseries. If you’re in need of a vacation (who isn’t these days?), you’ll feel swept away by the views of Scotland and enjoy feeling like you’re in on the road trip. If you’re eager to learn about a new culture, you’ll appreciate the educational aspect of the show. And for those simply looking for a comedic escape, you’ll laugh along at the banter between buddies Sam and Graham, who played Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s uncle, on Outlander. Oh, and, we should mention, for Jamie Fraser-lovers, keep an eye out for some shirtless action within this series. Can you tell we really miss Outlander? Luckily, we got to talk with the stars of the travel docuseries arriving on Starz Feb. 14 about their jaunt across Scotland by way of a camper van. The travelogue comes in the form of eight episodes during which Heughan and McTavish explore their Scottish heritage and everything from Clans and The Battle of Culloden to whisky tasting and folk dancing. “We did shoot a lot of extra material and actually, the original road trip we did to create the pilot episode, we created into a book that actually became a bestselling book,” Heughan told Parade.com, referring to the book he released last year Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other. “In there, there’s a lot more depth, a lot more information about the original road trip and the places we went.” One segment that didn’t make it into the series is their visit to an empty castle. But it was one of their favorite parts of the trip. “It was such an eery place. We were introduced to this great character who took us around there,” Heughan recalled. “It’s just such a creepy place. And they have a beheading pit!” Part of the inspiration to take this trip was to connect more with his character and the show, in addition to his own roots. As to whether any of his experiences on this journey would make it into Outlander, Heughan joked, “A camper van would be really good in Outlander. If Jamie drives one around.” McTavish added, “Maybe he could invent the camper van.” But Heughan isn’t sure it would be the right fit for Jamie’s wife, Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe). “Well, I could take Claire, though I have to admit, Claire, she’s a bit of a backseat driver,” he joked. “She’d be giving him directions, she would tell him he’s doing it wrong. Much like my current traveling companion. Just more hair, I guess,” he added, referring to McTavish. So, McTavish suggested, “Jamie could invent the motorbike and sidecar and Claire goes in the sidecar and off you go,” to which Heughan responded, “I’ll suggest that to the writers of Outlander and I’m sure they’ll go for it.” Can’t you just picture the Frasers riding off into the Scottish sunset on a motorbike and sidecar?
