Did Ellen Degeneres create The Masked Dancer?
The Masked Dancer first came about as a segment on Ellen. In a parody of the “who sung it” competition, host Ellen DeGeneres and her DJ Twitch watched various celebrities in outlandish costumes dance and tried to guess who was under the mask. Despite NBC doing this as a tongue-in-cheek reference to their network competitor, Fox took it a step further and actually announced in January that the series was in development. DeGeneres will serve as executive producer for the new show.
How does The Masked Dancer work?
Like its singing sister, The Masked Dancer will feature celebrity contestants decked head-to-toe in intricate costumes and face masks. Celebrities will be joined on stage by masked partners and back-up dancers, as they perform a series of dances together; spanning from hip-hop to salsa, jazz to tap dancing and more. When it comes to dance styles, the sky is the limit. Each week, a series of clues will be sprinkled throughout packages, costumes and routines, leading the panelists one step closer to figuring out which famous faces are freestyling behind the masks. One by one, contestants will be eliminated and forced to unmask, until only one is left.
