“If you haven’t seen any of them and just want to step into this weird thing because you love The Dick Van Dyke Show, it’s going to work,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly. “But if you’ve been tracking the 23 movies we’ve made and following along the stories into Phase 4, there’ll be a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds.” We’re breaking down some of the biggest WandaVision Easter eggs and theories and what they could mean for the show’s storyline.
WandaVision Easter eggs
The Maison du Mépris Wine
During the first episode, Wanda uses her powers to serve the bottle of wine at their dinner party. The label Maison du Mépris translates to House of Contempt or House of Misery, which some believe is a reference to the House of M arc. In the House of M story, Scarlet Witch suffers a breakdown and alters reality. In the past, Elizabeth Olsen has expressed interest in the House of M. “I would love to [do a standalone], and I would love it to be House Of M, which is a comic book series of The Vision and Scarlet Witch having a make-believe family,” she told Metro in 2018. “She [Wanda] believes she has twin children–she alters her own reality to believe that, but really she has a miscarriage and Vision goes along with it.” Olsen added, “Then they [Vision and her family] have to tell her that she was make-believing the entire time, and she has a very traumatic experience and screams, and kills all the mutants–but that’s an X-Men story so we’d have to adjust the ending.” Jimmy Kimmel brought up the wine bottle to the WandaVision star during her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “It translates to ‘House of Misery,’ which could be saying that the series is based on the popular comic House of M in which Wanda has a breakdown and there’s a lot of weirdness going on,” the host said, to which Olsen replied, “Our prop guy Russell would be a very clever man if he put that in.”
Vision’s Tie
Vision’s tie featured two dots in a rectangle surrounded by two other dots on the outside. A theory circulating online is that the tie design could “symbolize how Wanda is trapped in a fake reality” and being watched.
Toast Mate 2000 Commercial
Perhaps the most obvious Easter egg in the premiere episode is the toaster from Stark Industries, which was founded by Tony Stark/Iron Man’s father Howard Stark. In the black and white commercial, the toaster powers on with a red light flashing, ticking like a bomb. The product’s slogan reads: “Forget the past, this is your future!” As MCU fans might recall, Wanda made her first appearance in the Marvel movie Avengers: AgeofUltron, during which it was explained that her parents were killed by a Stark Industries bomb.
Vision’s “Indestructible” Head
Wanda lovingly says “my husband and his indestructible head,” but those who watched Avengers: Infinity War know very well that is not the case. Vision was killed in the 2018 film when Wanda destroyed the Mind Stone in his head, and again when Thanos rewound time to pull the stone out of Vision’s head.
The Number 6
One eagle-eyed watcher tweeted, “Something fun and creepy about Wandavision is that the number 6 is missing everytime something turns red like the toaster light, Dottie’s blood, and the helicopter, the number 6 is conspicuously missing. It even applies to the posters.” Another wondered whether the number 6 in the show has a connection to the villain Mephisto, who, according to Marvel, is often mistaken for the Biblical Satan. In the comics, Wanda created her twin sons “by unwittingly trapping and transforming two of Mephisto’s power fragments.” “So the number6 is being used a lot in wandavision. Could it be cause 6 can be 666 which is known as the devil’s number and mephisto is basically the devil,” one social media user tweeted. Another hint that Mephisto is featured in the series is in episode 2 when Dottie says, “The devil’s in the details.” Agnes, played by Kathryn Hahn, then tells Wanda, “That’s not the only place he is.”
S.W.O.R.D.
S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division), which was originally founded by Maria Rambeau, set up a response base outside of Westview, New Jersey after Monica Rambeau disappeared inside. Viewers saw the S.W.O.R.D. logo at the end of the first episode on a monitor and notepad, which as it was later revealed belonged to Dr. Darcy Lewis, who was watching Wanda and Vision on a screen. The logo was seen again on a red helicopter, actually a S.W.O.R.D. drone, outside of Wanda and Vision’s home and at the end of episode 2 on a suit worn by S.W.O.R.D. Agent Franklin, who climbed out of a manhole in Westview.
Bova Milk Ad
An ad for Bova Milk can be seen in the opening credits for episode 2, which is a reference to Bova Ayrshire, an evolved cow who served as a midwife for the birth of Wanda and her twin brother Pietro.
Strücker Watches Commercial
Again, the commercial in episode 2 has one of the most obvious Easter eggs…a watch with the names Strücker and Hydra, in addition to Hydra’s symbol. Baron Wolfgang von Strücker was a leader of Hydra who experimented on Wanda and her brother with the Mind Stone (that was later used to create Vision), which gave them their powers.
The Neighbor Agnes
Fans are speculating whether Vision and Wanda’s nosy neighbor Agnes is actually Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch, who according to ComicBook.com “mentored the chaos magic-wielding Wanda in the classic Marvel comics.” Viewers have pointed out similarities between Agnes and the Marvel villain’s brooches. One tweeted, “Look at the medallion thing on Agnes’ collar compared to the one on Agatha Harkness’ collar in the comics. I’ll be shocked if Hahn isn’t Harkness in WandaVision.” Agnes also has a pet rabbit named Señor Scratchy, whose name is very similar to Agatha’s son’s, Nicholas Scratch. Also, if you take out the second half of Agatha and the first half of Harkness, you get “Agnes.” Just sayin’!
“Help Me Rhonda”…or Wanda
Episode 4 revealed that it was FBI Agent Jimmy Woo who was trying to make contact Wanda. After a meeting for the Westview Elementary fundraiser, Wanda hears the song “Help Me Rhonda” on the radio, which as viewers pointed out sounds like “Help Me Wanda.” Woo’s voice could be heard interrupting the tune saying, “Wanda? Who is doing this to you, Wanda? Wanda?”
Welcome to Westview
A sign for Westview reads: “Home is where you make it” One Twitter user tweeted, “Foreshadowing the, assumed, eventual reveal that this entire town of Westviewis a fabrication of Wanda’s powers.” In the third episode, Wanda’s doctor tells Vision, “Small towns, you know, so hard to escape”…escape, interesting. WandaVision viewers saw Westview from the outside (as well as the energy field) in episode 4. “So you can’t reach anyone inside and everyone on the outside has some sort of selective amnesia,” Rambeau tells Woo, to which he responds, “This isn’t a missing person’s case, Captain Rambeau, it’s a missing town. Population 3,892.”
Wanda’s Twins
In episode 3, Wanda, who is a twin herself, gave birth to her twin sons Billy and Tommy. In the comics, Scarlet Witch’s sons “existed only as shards” of Mephisto’s soul, were absorbed back into him and disappeared. According to ComicBook.com, the “twins’ unmaking” caused “Wanda to suffer a mental break.” “Wanda’s powers fluctuated following that horrific event, influenced by outside parties such as the sorceress Morgan le Fay, who opened Wanda’s eyes to so-called chaos magic,” per Marvel. “Powerful and pushed to the brink of madness, Wanda plotted to destroy the Avengers as a misguided act of revenge for Thomas and William. As her plans played out, her former husband the Vision was ripped apart and Hawkeye, whom she originally joined the team alongside, lost his life.” Billy and Tommy were later reborn as Tommy Shepherd and William Kaplan a.k.a. Young Avengers members Speed and Wiccan.
Hydra Soak Luxury Bath Powder
Fans noticed a connection between the Hydra product in episode 3’s commercial to a soap that was previously mentioned on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. On the show, Agent Coulson discussed the “mind control soap,” explaining, “Hydra loads it up with chemicals. It seeps into our bloodstream, and plants false memories into our brains. They want us to believe this is a magical place.” The voice in the WandaVision commercial says, “Escape to a world all your own, where your problems float away. When you wanna get away, but you don’t wanna go anywhere, Hydra Soak. Find the goddess within.”
Geraldine Being Kicked Out of Westview
At the end of episode 3, Geraldine, who is actually Captain Rambeau, was ejected from Wanda’s sitcom reality after Wanda noticed her S.W.O.R.D. logo necklace (she also brought up Ultron, who killed Wanda’s brother!). “You’re not my neighbor. And you’re definitely not my friend. You are a stranger and an outsider and right now you are trespassing here and I want you to leave,” Wanda says in episode 4 before kicking her out. Rambeau lands in the S.W.O.R.D. response base where she tells Woo, “It’s Wanda. It’s all Wanda.”
Place in the MCU timeline
The fourth episode confirmed that WandaVision is set after the blip. The opening scene showed the chaos that ensued after the Avengers reversed Thanos’ snap in Endgame.
Vision is dead
Marvel fans saw Vision die in Infinity War, so we’ve all been wondering, how is he alive in WandaVision? Well, viewers saw his animated corpse in episode 4 when Vision returned inside his home to ask Wanda where Geraldine was. One fan tweeted, “I’M SORRY IS WANDA USING HER POWERS TO ANIMATEVISION’S CORPSE? IS THAT WHAT’S HAPPENING?” Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
