In fact, the only possible downside of the Super Bowl’s annual ad-stravaganza is that sometimes the commercials don’t live up to the hype. That wasn’t the case for Super Bowl LVI, however; with barely a dud in the 2022 lineup, this year’s spots leaned heavily on humor and nostalgia, with cast reunions from Scrubs and Austin Powers, references to Cable Guy and The Big Lebowski and even an old-school return of McDonald’s advertising icon Grimace—who, fun fact, was voiced by none other than RyanReynolds! More retro fun came courtesy of cryptocurrency platform Coinbase. The brand’s old-school-meets-new-school spot featured nothing but a wordless screen with a QR code bouncing around it like one of those DVD-era screensavers. Fans were confused, then curious, ultimately scanning that code—which called up an offer for $15 worth of free Bitcoin, plus a chance to win $3 million—so many times that Coinbase’s app crashed. How much is a Super Bowl commercial?
According to NBC Sports advertising sales chief Dan Lovinger, per The Hollywood Reporter, all of this year’s ad slots were essentially sold out before the current NFL season even began in September 2021 (as of mid-July 2021, 85 percent of spots were reported to be taken), save for a few spaces they were “purposely holding” to “make the most” of the limited inventory—which are now sold out as well, with Variety reporting that NBC’s ad inventory was officially depleted as of Feb. 3, with the last few spots going for as much as $7 million. Unsurprisingly, Super Bowl screen time comes with an equally super-sized price tag, as Lovinger said certain spots sold for as much as $6.5 million for a mere 30 seconds of airtime (and, as reported above, other spots went at the last minute in the ballpark of $7 million apiece). As is tradition these days, many brands were rolling out their Super Bowl ad campaigns weeks before the big game. Frito-Lay, for example, kicked things off exactly one month before Super Bowl LVI when the company shared a funny, two-minute preview video on Jan. 13 starring NFL greats Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Jerome Bettis (a.k.a. “The Bus”) and Victor Cruz. Frito-Lay then followed that up with another teaser on Feb. 2 that featured those famous football faces and more, including Marshawn Lynch, Deion Sanders and Troy Aikman. While many of the Super Bowl 2021 ads struck a more somber tone, as they were centered on the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems 2022’s ads could provide some much-needed levity and give the big game a shot of star wattage, with loads of A-listers like Zendaya, Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Trevor Noah, Gwyneth Paltrow, Megan Thee Stallion, Jennifer Coolidge, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd,Lindsay Lohan, William Shatner,Demi Moore and Mila Kunis (yep, Ashton Kutcher’s first and second wives—together!). “It feels like there’s huge excitement,” Jon Cook, global chief executive of ad agency VMLY&R, which is working on Super Bowl spots for its clients, toldThe Wall Street Journal. “There’s no creative limitations because of the pandemic or politics. People are really ready to get back to humor in this Super Bowl." Plus, so many celebs starring in this year’s Super Bowl spots that you should keep your eyes peeled for seeing some of them more than once! Peyton Manning and Jennifer Coolidge are just two of the stars repping more than one brand this year. Keep scrolling to watch all the 2022 commercials for Super Bowl LVI!
