At the end of Inventing Anna, we learn that (spoiler alert!) Sorokin was released from Rikers on February 11, 2021, but six weeks later was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa. Read on to find out more about where Anna Delvey (a.k.a. Anna Sorokin) is now.
Is Anna Sorokin in jail?
At the time of Inventing Anna’s February 2022 premiere, Sorokin was still in ICE custody at the Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, NY. Sorokin claims to have been shocked by her arrest, telling the New York Times, “ICE came to see me three times, starting in December 2020, and the final time they just let me know: We’re not interested in you… Nothing had changed in my circumstances from six weeks before.” She has also written an essay about her experiences in custody for Insider in which she details how she has been treated, particularly after testing positive for COVID-19.
Is Anna Sorokin being deported?
On March 14, 2022, The Cut reported that Sorokin would be deported to Germany that night. The New York Post added that she was expected to be put on a plane to Frankfurt and that she was allegedly “‘furious’ about the deportation, according to one close source, as she had put in an appeal to remain in the U.S. The appeal was meant to be heard on April 19.” According to Esquire, Sorokin fears that if deported to Germany, she will be “retaliated against [there] for embarrassing her country,” and has received multiple threats against her “due to the media coverage of her crimes.”
When will Anna Sorokin be released?
It seems Sorokin was released from the ICE detention center in upstate New York just hours before she was deported on March 14, 2022. In April 2021, an immigration judge decided that Sorokin would remain in ICE custody because her activity on social media after her release from prison indicated that she was not rehabilitated. Sorokin has claimed that her social media posts are meant as satire. “It was never meant to be serious,” she told The New York Times. After her original sentencing, Sorokin said in interviews that she did not regret her actions. When asked in a BBC interview whether crime pays, she responded, “In a way, it did.” Sorokin later explained her curt response to The New York Times, “I could not honestly say ‘no,’ in my situation, because I did get paid. For me to say ‘no’ would just be denying the obvious. I didn’t say that crime pays in general.”
Is Anna Sorokin rich?
The story about Anna Delvey’s $60 million net worth is just that: a story. While Sorokin was paid $320,000 by Netflix for her story, a judge had ordered her assets frozen in May 2019 and she was legally unable to take the money, due to New York’s “Son of Sam” law prohibiting criminals from profiting off their crimes. That money was instead used to pay restitution to the victims of her crimes, to the tune of $199,999. She has also paid $24,000 in state fines and about $75,000 so far to her attorneys. After all that, about $22,000 is left of the Netflix money, and we presume she will have more legal bills pending.
What has Anna Sorokin been doing in jail?
Sorokin has been at the Goshen detention center for almost a full year, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to post on Instagram and teasing out details of upcoming projects, such as a book and a podcast about the time spent in jail. According to Newsweek, Sorokin has also been attempting to capitalize on certain aspects of Inventing Anna, such as revealing who former boyfriend Chase really is to the highest bidder. Sorokin told The New York Times that she is working with Julia Fox, an actress who recently made headlines for briefly dating Kanye, on “a little something.” Sorokin is also developing a docuseries with Bunim/Murray Productions (the team behind Surviving R. Kelly and The Real World MTV series) that would pick up Sorokin’s story where Inventing Anna leaves off. Bunim/Murray Director of Development Michael Driscoll told Deadline, “Anna’s story is very much alive and still unfolding as we speak. We’ve been developing this project with her for months now – and spent countless hours on phone and video calls with her. She is a complicated and fascinating character, and we are looking forward to telling the next chapter of her ever-evolving tale.” There’s no word on when or where this limited series will air, or how much Sorokin will earn from this deal.
