“Our grandpa was a family practitioner in a small town in Indiana,” Bekah said. “We definitely wanted to follow in his footsteps.” So, the whole idea of forming a family band was a risk for them, especially since both Caleb and Joshua had graduated college with bio-chemistry degrees and Bekah was about to follow on the same track. But then their mother suggested they form a band, and it didn’t take long for them to take her up on the idea. Girl Named Tom—so named because Caleb and Joshua called Bekah Thomas when they were kids because they wanted another brother—joked with Parade.com about how their mom is feeling about it these days, because the band was only supposed to have been a one-year project. “We keep asking for loans,” Caleb joked, when asked about the fact that it doesn’t look as if there will be a doctor in the family. “Can we use the van a little longer?” Bekah added. “Yeah, we still don’t have cars ourselves,” explained Caleb. “I think they’re proud of us,” Joshua said. “They’re very supportive of what we want to do, and we’re really blessed to have their support in our lives. They were, ‘We were totally onboard with the idea for a year, but to keep going, I don’t know about that.’ I think at this point, they are probably totally onboard.” “The Voice has probably helped with that to be honest,” Caleb pointed out. And winning The Voice would cement their decision to keep pursuing this new dream. For challenge night, you sang Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.’ What was the biggest challenge? Joshua: We’re not used to doing high-energy stuff, which was fun, but since we’ve never done it, it was a test for us, like can we do this? Can we jump around a stage and pull it off? Caleb: Our blend and our harmonies are what we take our most pride in, so when we’re all at different places on the stage having fun, it is the priority for that performance, for Coldplay’s music, and for us, but that’s not what we do. Bekah: We’re all about blend and togetherness. Joshua: Music theory. Caleb: We’re nerds and so it feels good to let loose, but it is also a challenge. Does it seem real that you have gotten this far or is it like a fever dream? Caleb: The Coldplay performance elevated, it blew the roof off of our dreams. Up until this point on The Voice, we’ve been doing what we basically do in backyards and we haven’t been taking advantage of all the resources that being on a stage like this has to offer. So, this week to challenge ourselves—and Kelly wanted us to go big— and to realize what we really have here at The Voice is a once in a lifetime. I don’t know if it has set in yet, but it’s pretty neat. If you make it to the finale, who would be your dream artist to perform with? Bekah: James Taylor or Dolly Parton because they know songs of past times and current times. They would have a big bag to choose from. What will you take away from this experience? Joshua: Last week was special because we walked into our rehearsal with Kelly without having an arrangement for the song. We had never sung it before, so we got to build the song from the ground up together with her and there were some real vulnerable moments of our singing with her in the room. It was really cool how much she trusted us. She was, “I am not worried. I know you are going to figure it out.” She had great tips on how to have a better performance, so that was really special. What would we see on a Girl Named Tom tour that we haven’t seen on the show? Bekah: Our goal for Girl Named Tom is to be the next harmony trio of our generation and bring back those beautiful lyrics to catchy songs that really stick with people. The first step is those intimate places and to see if we can build it from there. Caleb: (jokes) What she was going to say was first step, Carnegie Hall. Bekah: I always say that but that’s a pipe dream. What does Kelly bring to you that we might not see on TV? Bekah: Kelly is a very busy person. She has her talk show. She has her Christmas album that just came out. She filmed a special. She is so busy, and her personal life is everywhere right now. I can’t imagine how that must feel, but when we’re in a room with her, she gives us her full attention and it really means the world to us as does the fact that she sees each contestant on her team for who they really are. For a Girl Named Tom, she’s really instilled confidence in our individual voices. We each have different tones and then bring them together for a unique blend in a lot of different genres. Caleb: I would also add that she is so busy, but she has so much focus in the short amount of time we have to work with her. She is all in. She hears everything. In the past, she hasn’t had a whole lot to say about the band, but this time she told them she wanted darker tones and advised the guitarist, the drummer, and the keyboard player “I want darker tones and if you can use mallets on the toms,” some really neat stuff that she was throwing out there that really showed us her genius.
