As we celebrate seeing more Loki in the future, let’s take a look at all the clues about possible second seasons for the rest of the MCU TV universe.
Will there be a Loki Season 2?
Yes! Another season of Loki was officially confirmed toward the end of the show’s Season 1 finale, when Loki’s TVA case file was stamped with the words, “Loki will return in Season 2.” That confirmation wasn’t a given; before the show’s Season 1 finale aired, some members of Loki’s creative team sounded more gung-ho about the possibility of a Season 2 than others. Loki creator and executive producer MichaelWaldron previously told the blog Murphy’s Multiverse, “It was really always my hope and intention with this to tell a complete story with this season… Season 1 would stand on its own.” However, he didn’t completely shut the door on a Season 2, adding, “Is there more story to tell in the future? I don’t know. Time will tell.” Contradicting Waldron, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Nate Mooresaid in April 2021 that Loki was created with more than one season in mind—and that, out of all the MCU spinoff shows hitting Disney+, Loki was the most likely to get renewed. “I think there’s a lot of storytelling in Loki that’s really irreverent and clever and cool, but also lends itself to multiple seasons in a way where it’s not a one-off,” Moore explained. As for Hiddleston, he told Slashfilm while doing the press rounds ahead of Season 1, “There may be some things coming around the corner, which I would love to talk to you about, but I can’t.” However, like Waldron, he also promised, “Season 1 has an ending. You heard it here first.” In May, Hiddleston similarly told Games Radar, “At this point, I have learned that for me to have any expectations is futile and a fool’s errand. Having said goodbye to the character once, twice, three times, I do not know what the future holds. But I’m excited to find out.”
Will there be a WandaVision Season 2?
All signs point to… probably not? Earlier this year, Moore seemingly put that nail in that coffin when he said, “I think WandaVision is a show you can only do once.” WandaVision star ElizabethOlsen has also spoken up repeatedly about whether her show would come back for more—and she’s seemed to suggest it wouldn’t. “No, no. It’s definitely a limited series,” Olsen told fellow TV star Kaley Cuoco during their “Actors on Actors” sitdown for Variety in June 2021. However, she quickly added, “I mean, I’m saying that. I don’t know. I mean, with Marvel, you can never say no.” Perhaps the biggest piece of evidence that WandaVision is a one-and-done show? As Olsen referenced in her convo with Cuoco, it was submitted for 2021 Emmys consideration as a Limited Series. That’s a category intended for shows that don’t go past their premiere season… but, then again, Big Little Lies got nominated as a Limited Series after it debuted on HBO in 2017, only to come back for a Season 2 thanks to its runaway success. Will Falcon and the Winter Soldier have a Season 2?
That just leaves the third MCU series to debut on Disney+ so far, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. There are a lot of tantalizing hints out there about that show’s possible renewal. Let’s start with the fact that, unlike WandaVision,The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was submitted for Emmys contention in the Drama Series categories. Maybe that’s a sign that Season 2 was always in the cards, although Moore claims Disney+ opted to submit Falcon and the Winter Soldier as a Drama Series simply because the show is, well, dramatic! “It does feel a bit more dramatic than some of our typical stuff,” he explained. “We thought [the category placement] was appropriate for what the show is trying to tackle.” Moore also sounded upbeat about a Season 2 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when he said, “Falcon and Winter Soldier is really about dealing with, to me, the legacy of what a superhero is, through the lens of Captain America and his shield, but ultimately through the lens of all these different characters. And that’s a story I think you can revisit in subsequent seasons because it’s an evergreen story.” Then there’s the title card that was revealed at the very end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Season 1 finale, which read, “Captain America and the Winter Soldier.” Like Loki’s Season 2 end-credits teaser, that insinuated that there’s a future for Mackie and Stan’s characters in Phase 4 of the MCU —but not necessarily in the form of another Falcon and the Winter Soldier season. Instead, fans thought that could mean a fourth Captain America feature film is coming with Mackie likely taking over the title role—or, that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will come back for more episodes under a new name. The answer to that question arrived on Aug. 18 when Variety reported that Mackie will indeed star in Captain America 4. No other casting news on the project has been announced, although Stan could be among those who join the project.
